*Plants in the desert must survive on less than 10 inches of water a year.

*Many desert plants can live to be 100 years old.

*The leaves and stems of many desert plants have a thick covering that is coated with a with a waxy substance, but the coating still allows them to absorb water and carbon dioxide.

*Most desert plants have long roots that tap water from deep underground. Others, like the cactus, can store water.

*During the hottest part of the day, many desert plants "roll up" their leaves to reduce the amount of surface area exposed to the sun and wind.

Desert Plant Life

In the desert biome, all plant life is referred to as flora. These plants have adapted to desert life by requiring very little water, and being able to hold their water for a long time. There are a variety of plants found in the desert such as sagebrush, acacia trees, umbrella thorn, saguaro cactus, coastal agave, and many more. However, the most common desert plant is the cactus.
