The Warsaw Ghetto during World War II is the setting for this story. It is an allegory of the Holocaust by sharing the pain and suffering of the cats in Warsaw who have lost their home, and their humans. What will the Jewish girl, who has escaped the life of the ghetto, do to help the cats? She herself has no food, nor blankets to make a home for the cats. The cats receive love and attention from the main character and her sister, but it is the cats themselves that save the residents of the ghettos in an incredible way.

Leonardo is terrible at being a monster. No matter how hard he tries, he can't scare anyone, not even the kid who is the biggest scaredy cat in the world. Since this isn't working out for him, maybe he can try being a wonderful friend instead.

Milo just doesn't get what so special about moms. They make him eat broccoli and take out the trash. They get mad when you paint your sister. Then one night after angrily falling asleep, he is awoken by a noise. Martians are kidnapping his mom. He sneaks onto a spaceship and follows them to Mars. There he finds out that Mars really needs moms. As he steps out to tell them they can have her, an accident happens and he finds out what moms are really for. This touching story is beautifully illustrated and fun to read again and again.
