Ulysses S. Grant was 39 years old when the Civil War began. Some of the more well known battles He was a veteran of were the Battle of Shiloh, Vicksburg, MS, and the Battle of the Wilderness. He was only the third person to ever hold the rank of Lieutenant General in United States history. General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Grant on April 9, 1865, bringing about the end of the War of the Rebellion. |
