Selecting Sources

You will need primary and secondary sources.

Primary-Primary sources are materials directly related to a topic by time or participation. These materials include letters, speeches, diaries, newspaper articles from the time, oral history interviews, documents, photographs, artifacts, or anything else that provides contemporary accounts about a person or event.

Secondary-Secondary sources are developed from interpretations and narratives of events based on primary sources, that is, documents and other evidence created by participants or eyewitnesses. The work of other historians is also used to create secondary sources.

For the last few years, the 8th grade classes have visited the Murphy Library at UW-La Crosse. At this site, you can search for books that might have helpful information on your topic. Be sure to write down the call number, title, and location of your choices so that you will have an easier time locating them once you're there.
