Overview

In order to brainstorm solutions, your group may need additional information.  Use the web resources, data, or links located on the left to formulate possible solutions to create a more respectful environment at OurTown High School and the surrounding community.  In addition, you may also use any of the resources on the Perspectives/Roles page to help you gain background information. Also, check out the Facebook Accetable Use Policy (below) and visit Facebook to find out what you can do as an end user.

Keep in mind the following questions as you formulate possible solutions to share with the school board:

How can we responsibly use social media?

What consequences should be in effect for those who are irresponsible and disrespectful cyber citizens?

Social Media Usage

Social Media and the School Board

Social Media in Our Schools:

The Past, the Present, and the Future

What should be the role of social media in our schools today?  Does social media improve students’ ability to acquire 21st century skills?

You will be researching social media from the perspectives of various stakeholders to decide the fate of social media in your school.  At the conclusion of your research, you will be compiling your findings into a presentation.  You will be sharing your presentation with the school board in an attempt to persuade them to advocate for the use of social media in schools.  The school board is especially concerned about age appropriateness, inappropriate use, and how the tool supports student learning.

Possible Questions for Interviewees:

· What, do you believe, is the role of social media like Facebook and Twitter in the classrooms of today and in the future?  In the Wausau School District?

· Should schools be involved in digital citizenship and teaching netiquette?

· What, if anything, do you want to know about social media from a student’s perspective?

· What are some pros and cons of students using social media in schools?

· How can we responsibly use social media?

· What consequences should be in effect for those who are irresponsible and disrespectful cyber citizens?
