Searching a Database

Badgerlink
This website provides information on using and searching databases in Badgerlink. Many of the strategies can also be applied to general databases.
Basic Database Searching Techniques
This guide is provides by the University of Indiana Bloomington and gives techniques of basic database searching. It includes information on Boolean searching, truncation, nesting, and stop words.
Boolean Operations
This guide from the UW-Whitewater Andersen Library provides information on using Boolean Operations. Boolean operations include AND, OR, and NOT and are used to narrow searches and make them more accurate.

Electronic Databases

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Some databases require a user name and password. Whitewater High School has subscriptions to these databases and can provide students with the information. BadgerLink is a project of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction that includes the following databases: EBSCO, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., Gale/Cengage Learning, Heritage Microfilm, Inc., LearningExpress, LLC, ProQuest, TeachingBooks.net, LLC and the Wisconsin Newspaper Association.

CultureGrams includes information on the cultures of more than 200 countries in a wide variety of formats such as maps, statistics, a glossary, photos, videos, recipes, and in-depth information on 25 categories
Facts on File
Facts on File includes the following databases: Bloom's Literary Reference Online, Issues and Controversies, and Issues and Controversies in American History.
Grolier Online
Grolier Online includes the following databases: Encyclopedia Americana, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, and the New Book of Knowledge.
Opposing Viewpoints
Opposing Viewpoints includes articles on different viewpoints, topic overviews, statistical tables, charts, and graphs.
Oxford Music Online
Grove Music Online includes the following databases: New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, New Grove Dictionary of Opera, New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, Oxford Companion to Music, and Oxford Dictionary of Music.
SIRS
SIRS includes the following databases: SIRS Researcher (student reference, social issues, health, science, and business), SIRS Government Reporter (historic and government documents, directories and almanacs), SIRS Renaissance Current Perspectives on the Arts and Humanities, and Spotlight on Green Movement.
World Geography
