Why study bugs?

  • At any time, it is estimated, that there are some 10 quintillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000) individual insects alive.
  • In the world, there are 900 thousand different kinds of living insects that we know about, and countless unknown species.
  • In the United States, there are approximately 91,000 species of described species of insects, or insects that have been studied.
  • There are approximately 73,000 species of undescribed species of insects, just in the U.S.
  • Recent studies indicate that there are more than 200 million insects for each human on the planet.

World's biggest insect

Although there are other giant insects that are longer, or wider than the Goliath Beetle, this guy holds the record for biggest insect because of its weight.  They can grow up to 4.5 inches long and weigh up to 3.5 ounces.
