Avoiding Plagiarism

Plagiarism.org

Plagiarism is the act of stealing someone's work or ideas. This can happen through the copying of someone's words or the borrowing of someone's ideas. Plagiarism is a SERIOUS OFFENSE.

Your final president report will be checked thoroughly for plagiarism. If any evidence of plagiarism is found in your paper, you will experience the following consequences:

  • Receiving an automatic 0 on your president report
  • A meeting with your parents, your teachers, and your principal
  • An afterschool detention for 5 days
  • The requirement to re-research and re-write your entire president's report. Your new president report will be due 7 days after you were notified of your plagiarism and you can only receive 50% credit for your final paper.

Please do NOT plagiarize ANY parts of your president report. Make every effort to make sure every page, paragraph, sentence, and word is your own.

To avoid plagiarism:

  • When doing research and reading articles and books, take notes in your OWN words
  • Look at your notes when you are done, and write a summary of what you learned. Use THESE ideas in your paper.
  • NEVER copy anything word for word from a website, article, or book
  • Always paraphrase or summarize what you've read in your OWN words
