The Problem

Recently, OurTown High School has been experiencing increased tension.  Disrespectful outbursts have escalated to in-school violence. When different parties are interviewed, online media seems to be at the heart of the matter.  One suicide attempt has been deemed a direct result of these attacks. Other students have reported self harm as a means of trying to escape the pain of cyberbullying.  Moreover, truancy rates are increasing, though direct correlation to cyberbullying has not been established at this time. Administration and teachers are concerned about further escalation.

Bullies have been around for a long time, but the problem of bullying has evolved as people use sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to torment their victims.  What makes bullies tick? How rampant is the problem of bullying? How is cyberbullying related to bullying in general, and what are the effects of cyberbullying? How can we responsibly use social media? What consequences should be in effect for those who are irresponsible and disrespectful cyber citizens?

The city leaders, school board, and parents are looking for answers to its cause and what can be done to remedy the problem. As a student council member, you have been asked to form a school task force to research the problem and recommend possible solutions.  Concerned parties have gathered information to help you understand the problem from the many perspectives so you can formulate solutions.
