You are researching the role of current and future students and how they feel about the Kickapoo mascot. Are they for or against keeping the mascot? Some students may not care about the issue when you ask their opinion. You will need to take that into consideration.
Remember you are a current student and your opinion counts but you are only one student.
You must talk to enough students to get a good sample. Get the thoughts of at least 6 current students and at least 4 future students (those students in younger grades).
Using a survey is a great way to get people's opinions. Use the links to help with how you want to do a survey.
Governor: You will analyze and research the concerns that the state government would have relating to the mascot controversy.
School Lawyer: You will research the concerns the school lawyer and school board have regarding the issue.
Teacher: You will research the issue from the perspective of a teacher who is concerned with cultural sensitivity and diversity issues related to the mascot controversy. You might want to talk to a Social Studies teacher.
Contact a local Indian Tribe and set up an interview with at least one member to find out what that person thinks about the mascot controversey.
Some background information:
This is an extra assignment for those students who want to go beyond what we have studied so far and would like to explore more broadly.
Perhaps you would like to contact Indigenous people in another country and tell them about our controversey and ask them their opinion.
