Your teacher will assign you to one of five teams. The first task you and your team members must accomplish is to set rules to follow as you work together. Use the attached form.
The second step requires that you, individually, research a group of people that would have a position in regards to the mascot controversy. You will be looking at their backgrounds, ideas and opinions in order to represent their view on this issue. Each role to be researched will be written down on a 3 x 5 card and then placed in a hat. Every student will get a chance to randomly pick a card from the hat. You will assume the role of the group that you choose from the hat. You will be providing information about that group to your team.
The various groups/roles are:
1. Current and Future Students: You will survery current students and younger students to determine if you will represent them for or against changing the mascot. When you have determined whether this group is for or against, you will then research the issue from their viewpoint.
2. Alumni and Community Members: You will survey alumni and other community members to determine if you will represent them for or against changing the mascot. When you have determined whether this group is for or against, you will then research the issue from their viewpoint.
3. Wisconsin Native American: You will research this issue from the perspective of a Wisconsin Native American.
4. United States Native American: You will look at the issue from the standpoint of being a Native American somewhere else in the United States.
5. Governor: You will analyze and research the concerns that the state government would have relating to the mascot controversy.
6. School Lawyer: You will research the concerns the school lawyer and board have regarding the issue.
7. Teacher: You will research the issue from the perspective of a teacher who is concerned with cultural sensitivity and diversity issues related to the mascot controversy.

As you think about your assigned role as representative of the group you picked from the hat, what questions come up? Use the "Others' Perspectives" file at the bottom of this box to begin thinking about others opinions.
After you have finished filling out the "Others' Perspectives" sheet, go to the Google Doc link below and add at least 3-5 questions that you want to answer. Feel free to add more.
