Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians

History and Information on the Oneida Nation

Who Are the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians?

Originally known as the Mohican Indians, they lived near the Hudson Valley, in New York state.  When they moved to an area near Stockbridge, Massachusetts, they became known as the Stockbridge Indians.

The name Mohican means "From the waters that are never still", which was what the tribe called the Hudson River.

In the 1820's and 1830's the tribe moved to Shawano, Wisconsin, and settled with the Lenape Indians, who were also known as Munsee.  Together they are now called the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, and they live near the town of Bowler, Wisconsin.
