Arctic Extension Activities

*Arctic ABC Book: Assign each letter of the alphabet to students and have them write facts and information for something beginning with that letter and include an illustration. When completed, compile them all as a class book.

*Build an Igloo: Collect empty milk jugs and build your very own classroom igloo.

*Coldest Day of the Year: Have your students research what the coldest day of the year was for your area, for other habitats (deserts and ponds), for places where family or friends live, etc. Then have them compare them using a number line.

 *Art: Draw a picture of three types of plant life and six types of animals that call the desert their home.

*Create your own Habitat: Draw an arctic ecosystem including plants and animals from the arctic.

*Research: Choose an animal from the arctic habitat and research it. Find out information about their life cycle, predators/prey, homes, etc.

Desert Extension Activities

*Sand Vehicle: In a small group of 2-4 kids, create a sand vehicle out of a kleenex box. After creating your vehicle, write an announcement for the newspaper to inform and persude people about it.

*Acrostic Poem: Use the vocabulary you have learned to write an acrostic poem with the word DESERT.

*Art: Draw a picture of three types of plant life and six types of animals that call the desert their home.

*Cactus Adaptation:  This is an activity that helps discover how different plants have to adapt to their desert environment with minimal water. 

*Day/Night in the Desert: Draw contrasting scenes representing daytime and nighttime activities in the desert.

*Field Trip Ideas: Follow this link to the Wisconsin Wetlands website which gives you a variety of field trips that can be taken all over the state.

*Busy Pond Mini Book: Give this printout to students to make a book about ponds and the plants and animals that live there.

*Wetland Research Booklet:  This book answers important questions such as: what is a wetland? what are the different types of wetlands? why are wetlands importand? who and what lives in a wetland?

*Pond Ecosystem Project:  Check out this lesson plan created for the pond ecosystem which includes many interactive games and fun activities.
