BOOK: Dawn of a New Day: The New York World's Fair, 1939/40 edited by Helen A. Harrison (link to book review)The New York City Building in Queens is one of the few remaining original structures left from the 1939 New York World’s Fair and also one of the buildings featured in the 1963 New York World’s Fair. It is also the home of the Queens Museum of Art (QMA) which holds a large collection of material from both New York world’s fairs in its permanent collection. In 1980, Helen A. Harrison organized a major QMA exhibit of artifacts, documents, graphics and photographs related to the 1939/40 fair. Dawn of a New Day lists, describes and illustrates artifacts from that exhibit while describing fair attractions big and small. In addition, the book includes five interpretive essays, comprising seventy pages, which provide deep, thoughtful analysis of the fair’s cultural and historical context. The book includes color and black and white photos which are integrated with the text.
