Long before Wisconsin became a state on May 29, 1848, it was a dairy and farming area. Two of our major industries are dairy products (milk, cheese, butter) and farming (corn).
With our very fertile silt loam soil, crops and animals thrive. Being bordered by major rivers and lakes helps keep our soil moist. With at least four major rivers, the Mississippi and St. Croix as a border between us and Minnesota and the Chippewa and Wisconsin running through the middle, we have multiple recreational activities available, such as boating, fishing, and swimming. These activities are also enjoyed by our two bordering Great Lakes, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, and our many interior lakes, including Lake Winnebago.
