Westward Expansion & Other Causes

Many think that slavery was the only issue that the War Between the States was fought over.  The cause of the war was actually more complicated.  The Northern and Southern sections of the United States developed along different lines. The South remained a predominantly agricultural economy while the North became more and more industrialized. Different social cultures and political beliefs developed. All of this led to disagreements on issues such as taxes, tariffs and internal improvements as well as states rights versus federal rights.  These disagreements eventually came to a boil and led to secession and the war.

SECESSION was the withdrawal of the Southern States from the Federal government of the United States.
