One of the most famous units during the Civil was known as the Iron Brigade. The Iron Brigade was made up of 3 regiments from Wisconsin, 1 from Indiana, and 1 from Michigan. They were also known as the "Black Hat Brigade" because of their distinctive felt hats. The YouTube video below is a book trailer for a book about the Iron Brigade.

Old Abe

One of the most well known figures in Wisconsin from the Civil War is Old Abe, an American bald eagle who served as the mascot for the Eighth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He participated in over thirty battles, narrowly avoiding significant wounds on several occasions.
