Classical- Also known as "Art" music, is music written by professional musicians through out history and the present. Examples of composers of this genre would include Beethoven, Mozart, Pachelbel from history or Phillip Glass, Eric Whitacre, and Gwenyth Walker from the present.
Jazz- American style incorporating flexible rhythms, variety of structured and unstructured melody and solo capabilities. Most popular instruments include saxophone, trumpet, trombone and bass. Examples are Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Louie Armstrong, and Count Basie.
Rock- Centered around the guitar, rock music generally is performed by bands of 3 or more. There are many offshoots of rock but all are typically live musician led instead of computerized instrumentation. Examples are Beatles, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Metallica, and Fall Out Boy.
Hip-Hop- Includes rapping and other rhythmic speech. Includes synthesising and beatboxing. Examples are Jay-Z, Akon, Black-eyed Peas, and Flo Rida.
Pop- Mash of many different styles but is generally more pleasing to listen to than it is musically deep. Most songs maintain the same style format and rely more on computerized instrumentation and mechanics than other genres. Examples are Madonna, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, and Selena Gomez.
Country- American genre that is a ballad style generally with acoustic guitars and fiddles. An ever evolvng genre, it has more storytelling qualities. Examples are Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lady Antebellum.
Musical Theater- A unique combination of music and theater. Music is part of a storyline and are generally set to be played by a variety of pit instrument make ups. Examples are Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Annie, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music.
