Restaurant Creation

1. Your Task

You will create a restaurant scene that reflects your culture and traditions. Your restaurant scene must include:

  • One plated authentic dish made from locally grown goods
  • A menu
  • Seating and Utensils
  • Proper Decor
  • A Virtual Floor Plan Using Google Sketch-Up
  • A rationale explaining how each element of your restaurant connects to some aspect of culture, customs, and/or traditions

You will not only create a virtual model of your design, but you will also physically set up the space in the library as an exhibit at the end of the project.

3. Your Menu

You will design a menu using Microsoft Publisher. Your menu should reflect the atmosphere and cultural significance of your restaurant through its design, visual appeal, and the menu items that are listed. Make sure to include your plated dish in the menu!

See below for menu examples:

5. Your Space

You will turn a space in the library into your very own restaurant table, where you will present your menu, place setting, and dish to exhibitors. Essentially your job is to:

2. Your Food

The first thing you will need to do is create a unique and original dish using some of the locally grown goods that you harvested yourself. Pay close attention to compatibility of certain foods, aesthetics, and the name of your dish. Each should be representative of your culture, customs, or traditions in some way. Your final dish should be plated and ready to display.

You may create an appitizer, main dish, or dessert for this project.

4. Your Virtual Design

Create a full virtual floor plan of your restaurant using a 3D modeling program. Your floor plan needs to address seating design, colors, decorations, atmosphere, and any other element of your restaurant that you will not have the opportunity to incorporate in your physical display.

6. Your Rationale

Create a rationale which explains how each element of your project was created to reflect your culture, customs, or traditions in some way. Explain the process and significance of each element of your project. You may complete your rationale in many different formats. Some suggestions are listed below:

  • Traditional Essay
  • Narrated Photostory
  • Animoto
  • Website/Wiki
  • Prezi
  • PowerPoint
  • Video
  • Or Come Up With Your Own Idea!

Each project should minimally address:

  • Overview of the local culture and traditions
  • Process of growing and harvesting local food
  • Design and rationale for the original dish
  • Restaurant seating, decor, table setting
  • Menu design and food items
