What IS Number Sense?

Number sense refers to a person's general understanding of number and operations along with the ability to use this understanding in flexible ways to make mathematical judgments and to develop useful strategies for solving complex problems (Burton, 1993; Reys, 1991). Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI)

This article, which appeared in the Wisconsin Center for Education Research's publication WCER Research Highlights, offers a succinct introduction to Cognitively Guided Instruction, a constructivist approach to math problem solving that was developed by Thomas Carpenter and Linda Fenema at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
