The word Renaissance is French for "rebirth." During this time, there was a rebirth of the interest in the past acheivements of ancient Greece and Rome. This "rebirth" meant new developments in all areas of life, but there were significant advances in the areas of the arts and science.
The Renaissance began in Italy in the 1300's. It continued to spread over Europe over the next three centuries.
