Wilderness Survival: Teachers

Gear Up! Activities

The "Gear Up!" activity focuses on assembling a survival kit for general outdoor use. "Survival Simulation" is a great introductory activity for the whole unit or to see what they've learned. Students in groups rank 12 items they have on hand in a survival situation. The "Winter Survival Kit" activity focuses on surviving if your car breaks down in the winter.

Safety/Rescue Activity

The "Safety/Rescue" activity involves students learning about using a mirror to signal for help and students practicing this.

Water, Sweet Water

Shelter Activities

The "Shelter" activity focuses on assembling a tarp shelter or debris hut. The "Outdoor Survival Lesson Plan" provides a variety of activities and information for teaching survival skills.

Fire!

The "Fire" activity has students build four different types of fire then reflect on the process and possibly create their own fire layout.

Food Activity

The "Food" activity involves talking about foods that could be taken with them if they were prepared for a wilderness situation or just for hiking.  Trail mix will be put together and eaten.
