What is Sumo?

Sumo is the national sport of Japan. The object is to force one's opponent to touch the ground with any part of his body except the soles of his feet or to step out of the ring. 

What are they wearing?

No, they are not wearing underwear! The are actually wearing a belt called a "mawashi". To learn more about them, click on the picture below.

Play Newspaper Sumo

All you need is a  piece of newspaper and a friend to play. Players use their rear ends to push the other player off the paper, no hands allowed. Click on the picture to get the full rules!

c. Put your and your friend’s wrestlers in the center of the circle and fold their arms over each 

other’s. Then, tap the edge of the box lightly with your fingers. Rallying cry is “Hakkeyo-i” 

“Nokotta”.  This is like “Set””Go”.The person whose sumo wrestler makes the other fall 

down or get pushed out of the ring wins.
