Island of Hope, Island of Tears: The Story of Ellis Island and the American Immigration Experience  (1989)

This video takes a look back in time at the single largest migration explosion in our American history: 1890 to 1920.  It's a short documentary about Ellis Island (only about 30 minutes), but it's powerful.  This was written and directed by 4-time Academy Award winner Charles Guggenheim.

This hour-long video incorporates two main elements related to the Statue of Liberty: 1)The design and construction of the statue, and 2) the way the statue evolved into the symbol that welcomes the weary and forlorn.  There are a number of obscure, yet fascinating facts about the Statue of Liberty that could surprise even the most literate historian.

Ellis Island  (2003)

This video was first produced for the History Channel.  As that channel often does, the story of the evolution of this processing center is told through touching stories that illustrate how lifes were affected.  This video also is honest about the anti-immigrant attitudes as well as "open door" sentiment so often associated with Ellis Island.
